1. Anyone with a computer can be a web designer. In fact, the Marketing Director’s nephew already is.
2. It is only when the print arrives that the typo will be spotted immediately, and then by everyone who sees it.
3. Your client will love your design, “apart from one or two simple changes” then proceed to turn the job inside out.
4. All clients promise to send you content immediately. Their concept of time turns out to be akin to that of a Time Lord.
5. 10% of your time is spent building the site. 60% is spent waiting for content. The other 30% is spent waiting for approval. Note that only the lowest proportion of this time is actually billable.
6. Final client approval will always be given one hour after the final print deadline.
7. Everyone involved – client, designer, printer – will give false deadlines. This means the designer will work overtime to produce the finished proof, then wait weeks until the job finally appears.
8. One of the client’s main criteria in selecting the agency to do the job will be creativity. Then they’ll tell you they want a site exactly like so-and-so’s.
9. If you provide two designs, a third will be requested. When you provide the third, one of the first two will be chosen.
10. The wealthier the client the harder they will beat the agency on cost, and the longer they’ll take to pay the invoice. This is under the belief that working for that client will add to the agency reputation, so they don’t really deserve to be paid for the privilege.
